WHAT are GOOGLE ADs? (formerly “adWORDs”)
According to a survey conducted by Constant Contact, “The number one thing keeping business owners up at night is how to attract new customers or lead generation.” Google Ads or Pay Per Click helps businesses get more traffic, leads and new customers.
Google Ads is Google’s advertising platform that lets anyone advertise on Google. The beauty of Google Ads are that you are only advertising for specific words or keywords. So… when potential customers search for keywords or phrases that you select, they will see your ad.
These ads show up as the top 3 search results noted with a little “AD” icon. They also show up at the bottom 4 listings, on Google Maps, YouTube and can show up in tons of other places across the web depending how you set up your account.
When you set up an Ad campaign correctly, your business can literally be the first thing people see when they search for any of the keywords you add to your campaign. Obviously, that can be a pretty powerful source for lead generation.
But let me give a warning. You must pay very close attention to how you set up and manage your Google Ads account and campaigns. If you set things up correctly you can have High Converting leads for a relatively low cost. But… if you set things up incorrectly you will get thousands of clicks costing you tons of dollars and still, oddly enough, not get any phone calls.
At Silverback Web we have spent a great deal of time mastering how to set up Google Ads and Pay Per Click campaigns to get not only clicks – but calls with a small budget.
HOW DOES PPC WORK?
Pay-Per-Click, just as it sounds, is a system where you pay Google to advertise for you, but you only pay when someone clicks on the ad. This means folks may see your ad but not click – giving you an added benefit of building some brand recognition for free.
However, if they click, and you do want them to click, you will be charged anywhere from $1 to $9 per click. The cost is determined by the competitive nature of the keyword used to show the ad. Some keywords are not as competitive as others. If you are selling bonsai trees I’m pretty confident your keywords will not be in $1 range, but if you sell insurance or home loans, the cost per click can get pretty high. Check out the infographic below about some of the most expensive keywords on AdWords.
How Much Does a Google Ad Keyword Cost?
Don’t let these numbers scare you because there are still tricks we can use to get your ads showing with keywords that are not as competitive. To use mortgage loans as an example, instead of going after “mortgage loans” as our primary keyword we could build a campaign around “hero loans” or “USDA Loans in my city.” Bottom line: we can create different campaigns with a variety of long tail keywords rather than simply go after the low hanging fruit.
