What is Google my business and why is it important?

First question, what is Google My Business {GMB}?

Google defines GMB as:

“Google My Business is a free and easy-to-use tool for businesses and organizations to manage their online presence across Google, including Search and Maps. By verifying and editing your business information, you can both help customers find you and tell them the story of your business.”

Google receives over 40,000 searches a second. If you have a local business – it is extremely important that you verify your business with Google. You’ll greatly increase your chances of being found if you do this one simple step — Verify your business with Google My Business. It’s a free and very powerful first step towards getting your business found on local search.

When you search for a local business by name, Google often displays a side panel with information about that business including hours of operation, a phone number, and reviews. Google calls this sidebar the Knowledge Panel. Google also shows your business in what is known as the “local 3-pack” (sometimes called the “snack pack”) and on Google Maps. Your business will begin to appear in all three of these places when you have a verified Google My Business page. If you run a local SEO campaign, you will greatly increase your chances of showing up in all three more frequently.

So let me recap because I just said quite a bit right there. A verified business on Google will show up in three places.

  1. Knowledge Panel* – or the right sidebar
  2. Google Maps-
  3. The Local Pack- a listing of the top three local businesses related to a search query.

* I should note that Google warns that verifying will not guarantee you’ll show up in the side panel.

“Like search results, whether or not a business’s information will appear in the knowledge panel is determined by a variety of factors. Relevance, distance, and the prominence of the business all contribute to its standing in local search results. Verifying a business does not guarantee that it will appear in the Knowledge Panel.”

However, if you follow the GMB: best practices and optimize your business with some solid Local SEO you’ll pretty much always show up. Google won’t guarantee, and I can’t either, but if you do things right – it should just work.
